TEACHER who INSPIRED
Best Teacher award- I won two
times. It will not be an exaggeration if I mention that its all due to my
TEACHER and GUIDE Prof.Bharathi Bhat who is a role model for many. Microwave
community regards me just because I was a student of the world ideal teacher
B.Bhat. Lesser did I know that I will
meet such an ETHICAL teacher during my college days when I used to stand in
front of ‘GIRIJA’, Ellis Road,
Mylapore(the permanent residence of Sarvapalli Dr.S.Radhakrishnan who was
instrumental in India celebrating his birth day as Teachers day). Harvard
University educated B.Bhat has set an example of how an ideal teacher should
be.She is a scholar, motivator, highly principled intellectual, stalwart in the
subject, makes the student to think, soft spoken , not compromising any thing
for the quality research, ethical , student friendly , dignified, imparts
creativity, transparent and above all workaholic and the most unassuming noble
professional.
After her successful research tenure in
Harvard University under Ronald King(author of the classical book on Antenna),
unlike many Indian Professors, she did not stay there further but returned back
to serve the mother land and facilitated many scholars reach sky high academically
and technically. Joining in IIT Delhi
in 1973 she nurtured the country’s technological progress in the field of
Microwave Engineering. Electromagnetics, the most difficult subject for
electrical engineering students is a child’s play for her and she will train
the students and make them love Microwaves. She corrects mistakes rather than
answers during paper evaluation. Only after finding solutions of each question,
she completes the question paper setting. She worked more time in the Microwave
laboratory, IIT Delhi
during Sabbatical leave. She is the first Indian lady academician who
contributed more practical Microwave Engineering in the defense field and
research. She teaches from her Heart and not through the books. In Microwave
Engineering class she writes what works and works what she writes.
Brilliant in studies,
professionally accomplished, sharp in intellect and memory, courageous and
forthright in expressing views coupled
with
a kind personality stands tall to inspire many students and research scholars.
Bhat’s books (co authored by
Prof.Shiban K.Koul) On ‘Phase Shifters’, “Analysis, Design and Applications of
Fin lines”, “Strip line like transmission lines” are the reference books for
the academicians and technicians world wide. Her research findings have proved
‘Indians can be world beaten’. She has
more than 100 research publications in IEEE journals and authored more than 7
world class microwave integrated circuit books of very high practical value.
Those books used to serve as ready reckoners for Microwave components and
circuit designers world wide.
Dr.APJ Abdul kalam has commented her
achievement in his “wings of the fire” when she had developed Phase Shifter at
the time of its non availability due to restrictions from developed countries.
He further said the achievement of Bhat for design and development of multi
tracking radar system has influenced him greatly.
"The AKASH missile system is guided by Phased Array Radar - RAJENDRA. This radar can simultaneously track multiple aircraft and also guide multiple missiles towards these targets. The crucial technology to achieve this capability is the 'phase shifter', when integrated in large numbers for electronic beam steering. RAJENDRA Radar has 4500 phase shifters. These phase shifters were not commercially available because of restriction from developed countries. This phase shifter was designed and developed by Prof Bharati Bhat, a well-known and respected scientist from Centre for Applied Research in Electronics (CARE) of IIT, Delhi, with her team. Today, India has the Phased Array Radar technology which is on par with that available in developed countries."
- DR.APJ ABDUL KALAM
“Normally design engineers do not
have adequate opportunity to teach, and academic scholars rarely have the
experience of developing devices and systems to the ultimate point of seeing
them tested in the filed and accepted in service. Professor Bharathi Bhat
combines these two distinct experiences in a very unusual manner and has done
so for a number of years” – rightly quoted Prof.P.V.Indiresan, former. Director,
IIT Chennai.
“ The visit of Bharathi Bhat,
Emeritus Professor of IIT Delhi
to N.I.T., Trichy was memorable and
Motivational “- reported The HINDU. Those who have aversion for
electromagnetic theory started loving it after her lecture.
Bharathi Bhat raised the values of
the awards by accepting them. Prof.S.K.Chatterjee award, Distinguished Fellow of
IETE, VASVIK Industrial research award for development of Ka-Band wave component
and Ferrite Phase shifters for Defense organization, Distinguished Service
award of IIT Delhi,DRDO academy excellence award, Institute of Engineers award,
Ram lal Wadhwa Gold medal, SK Mittra award
, The first IETE
Prof.K.Sreenivasan award, IEEE Life time achievement award are the few
of the many awards decorated the noble microwave legend of the world.
SHOULD I NOT THINK THE NOBLE TEACHER Prof.BHARATHI
Bhat on this TEACHER’s Day ?
- Dr.S.Raghavan,
Professor/EC
Dept., N.I.T., Trichy
(Last Research Scholar of Prof.B.Bhat)
