VISIT TO TEMPLE OF LEARNING (BITS PILANI LIBRARY) ON 23.11.2024
I (Dr.S. Raghavan, Professor (HAG) Retd., ECE Department, NIT Trichy and also Library Over all coordinator, NIT T for 2 years and the sole reason for the present massive building of NIT TRICHY library) after 44 years of research and Development was working till 2022 was invited by CEERI, CSIR to deliver an invited talk on the first Director (on his 100th birthday 19 Nov which coincided with Vacuum Electronics Devices Society VEDA three days conference) Dr. Amarjitsingh.
I owe my VEDA acquittance to 80 years young’ microwave tubes’ stalwart of the country/world Dr. BN BASU who has to his credit around 8 books on the very tough subject “electromagnetic theory” and the most needed guide for researchers.
I extended my stay in CEERI, mainly to visit the BITS, PILANI Library since many had told me much about its unique facilities. Seeing is believing. One of the few best Libraries I have ever seen in my 70 years of life. The first encouraging aspect was the readiness, highly informative and knowledgeable Librarian Dr. Ranjan Sinha Thakur. He and the library faithfully follow every vision of Dr. Renganathan. The whole Library implements more than his specifications.
For 25 years I have developed the interest in LIBRARY science apart from my specialization “MICROWAVE INTEGRATED CIRCUITS”. I feel proud that the present Library of N I T Trichy establishment is due to my initiative and plan. I am a member of four Library Societies of India.
The entrance of the library itself reflects art and ergonomic structure. Some places remind me of Ajantha cave paintings. Full details of the heritage treasures of Ajantha are there in the ‘Rare Books collection” section. Exclusive rare books of Jawaharlal Nehru, Swami Vivekananda, Father of Nation, Rabindranath Tagore, and Visionary BIRLA are a few of the many diamond treasures in the library.
Ideal place for competitive exams. There are feasts for children too. I found 80 % usage by the knowledge-thirsty students. The dome avoids electrical illumination and uses daylight. The Rare Books section is a TREASURE and echoes the heritage places and ancient and modern personalities.
The original books of “Constitution of India”, “Geetanjali inspire recent generation students. The back volumes so nicely displayed the needed reference journals. Coffee and Snacks break the continuous reading “law of dimensional utility”. Only thing, if I am correct, low tone music is missing. However it is not felt by students since they have all audio gadgets. Nowhere I found “WEBS”. Automation in “BOOKS ISSUE” and “RECEIVING” is very much working. Brainstorm session helps students. Cunicals encourage silent discussion. A video conference room is another attraction. Materials for competitive exam preparation are plenty. I found every staff member is student-friendly. Separate room for RESEARCHERS caters to the needs of Ph.D. Scholars.
Being Photography as a hobby, every place I see, it induces me to click snap. In no other Library, I have seen that many awards of LIBRARIAN exhibited in his room. Searching books is child’s play. A register for missing books is maintained. Until yesterday, I thought that “V.I.T./, Vellore Library was the best in south India, but after seeing BITS PILANI library, I feel this is a unique library of the Country and one should not miss to see it and enjoy it.
The hospitality and helping nature of every staff of the library are noteworthy. I had flashed the UNIQUENESS of the Library and Librarian to many of my associates. The library is so nice that the next day also, I had spent in the knowledge centre. I hear a few students saying very GOOD about the library. The innovation zone is a gift to dreaming students.
The staff members make one feel at home. There are no restrictions on bringing personal books, or laptops. The timings of the library facilitate and induce long hours of study and preparation. Students are lucky enough to get this kind of indescribable facilities and resources.
In short, one should never miss to see this unique knowledge centre whenever an opportunity knocks. One will see the REAL DIFFERENCE. One can feel a totally different atmosphere from what is seen in most of the libraries of the country. Patron traffic counter, Digital library, Printing and reprography service collaborative spaces in the library, brainstorm and group discussion room, Innovation zone, research zone, online room reservation system free book service institutional repository, digitization services plagiarism checking service, young learners section speak volumes.
I can very firmly say BITS PILANI LIBRARY makes INDIA proud. WHO TOLD INDIA does not HAVE KNOWLEDGE CENTRES ON PAR WITH TOP UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES of the WORLD??????????????????????
